Hey, if you're going to go through all that trouble (and be unable to ride for a week!) why not call around to a local BMW dealer to find one who can make a copy, or ask your local where they get their keys made? Just saying...

Good point Tim. And in fact, the neighborhood hardware stores have worked for some guys' keys.
My problem is that the notches in my key are cut with sharp angles like the letter "V" or "M" however the copies that hardware stores and locksmiths made on on my steel blanks had rounded notches that just didn't work; that is, I could insert the key into the ignition or luggage lock slots but could not turn it. Bullis locksmith up on Addison Street did okay though.
I bought some steel key blanks from Chicago BMW but they couldn't offer any advice on where to have duplicates made. That was 2 years ago; maybe they have a better system now.

I got a blank from my BMW motorcycle dealer and then went to the nearby BMW auto dealer - who cut a new spare key for me.
