R75/5 sitting for 17 years... 1 Year, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I have just picked up a BMW R75/5 SWB project with title. Only 5400 or so original miles on it. But it was disassembled in 1993 by someone who planned to do a custom thing, powercoat frame etc and then didn't know what to do with it once it was apart

He dropped it when he did some kind of wobble ( I hear this is common on SWB models)but no damage other than some scuffs.

Now I'm fairly mechanical so I know I should spray WD40 and oil in the cylinders before I try to put it through compression etc...and oil change etc before I actually try to start it. (So I don't shave the cylinders) Plus use penetrating oils and make sure to soak the pushrods etc...

But is there anything else uniquely BMW that I should do before I try to start this motor? I'm assuming (and hoping) that with only 54xx miles it won't have to be broken down and rebuilt etc.

Anything I should worry about on the trans other than change all the fluids etc?

If anyone out there has any helpful info or comments please feel free.

Thanks, Joe

Joseph- I'm sorry to see that you posted your question back in July and here it is almost October and you haven't received a single response. Shame on us as a group. I am just now reading your post, but if you want to talk anything over, feel free to call me at 630-235-9898. You probably have it figured out by now. But another good resource is Seymour Goldberg, who would be happy to offer you any advice for getting you going on this project. Hopefully you are past it all and riding it happily by now, but if not, please don't hesitate to call. Again, I apologize on behalf of our club for the non-responsiveness.

Dan,

I recently read that a bike in a similar situation was handled by taking the plugs out and pushing it in gear to loosen up the pistons, after a good soaking with the penetrating oils. How about before and after pictures of the restoration and thus a spot for a presentation to the club?

Sorry guys, I just came back on and saw the reply's...I ended up getting some money and bought another bike and offed this one to another. Just to let you know, once we spayed the penetrating oil in, soaked it and rocked it, then changed the oils etc, it started right up.
