Ice Cream ride! 4 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 5
Flash!!! We have a date for this: I've pretty much settled on the first weekend in June, making it June 7-8.

Depart from Burnham Park at 9:00 (Please start with enough fuel to get to Michigan City, IN)
Map of Burnham Park

We will head south on Lake Shore Drive and jump on the Skyway to bypass some less than scenic neighborhoods. (Bring your IPass if you have one.) Once in Indiana, we will be back on 2-lane (Rte 12) the rest of the way. Travel time according to GPS S/W is about 5 1/2 hours so allowing for breaks and lunch, we should be there for Ice Cream late afternoon. (Maybe we'll stop at Redamak's for lunch) After that we head to Henry's place to set up camp and prepare a BBQ chicken dinner. That evening we'll have a camp fire and maybe roast some marshmallows.

The next morning we'll have a pancake breakfast, lounge around a bit and break camp and head back. On our return trip we'll stop for lunch at Kurt Bihler's place and then it's back on the Blue Star Hwy.

Please read the rest of the thread for further details.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Temperature is about 0 out there and we're months from the riding season. Why am I thinking about this?

I dunno. But I did.

Last summer when we visited #1 son, Henry, he showed us a local ice cream shop - The Blue Moon - and I'd like to go back.

My initial thought is to camp at Henry's place. He has a few acres outside of Ovid, MI. That's about an hour north of Lansing. We can probably locate lodging near by for those who prefer not to camp.

Aside from the ice cream, there are some nice roads to travel on the way, starting with Dunes Highway in Indiana to the Red Arrow and Blue Star highways up through Holland Michigan. Then it's across the state on the kind of 2 lane highways that criss cross Illinois. There's not a lot of excitement, but it can be a very pleasant ride.

So I'm thinking... Do this as a Saturday/Sunday ride? Or should we do it as a Friday evening/Saturday ride? That would mean heading there partially in the dark, but we could choose interstate there and take a more leisurely route back on Saturday.

So... Who is interested in this and what is your preference?

Next step is to get it on the calendar. I'm thinking late May or early June to avoid truly hot weather (and perhaps leverage the late sunset time.)

thanks,
hank
