Weather was great - food was homemade - the riders who came - good fellowship.
As I posted, I met new member Ingrid Wessel at Omega Rest - no one else showed an missed a David Adler tour of the homeland. Treveled thru Little Rock on Old Chicago Road and gassed in Paw Paw. Passed the Windmill Farm at I39 and noticed that every windmill was working. In the nearly 10 years that I have passed this way, there was always 25-30% of the windmills not rotating. Maybe our economy is finally operating with alternative means.
Proceeded to Amboy. Took pic of plate on Long Branch Inn that the first Carson Pirie Scott store was located there. Walked across the street to the museum(Amboy was a railroad stop on the N-S railroad line of the IC for grains since the 19th Century), met the sister of a basketball player from Amboy whom I played against in HS> Also played football against a brother of her ex- husband and lived as a kid with the English teacher in the HS and who commuted from Oregon. There another example of old home week for David.
Reviewed The Green River Ordinance Depot that Paul Burkett recommended. One additional fact - the torpedoes were made in the plant which is now a mall at DesPlaines Ave/ Roosevelt Road in Forest Park. There are pics in the mall about 1940s.
Continued to Dixon and Rte 2. Stopped at Grand Detour to say hello, give a HUG to a high school classmate and then traveled on Ridge Road to White Pines( another MTE location???), then to Mt Morris, thru Oregon to Grubsteakers.
Paul Wilson was first to show - came out the scenic route 64 from Chicago, then Tom Carlsen showed after passing us in Oregon as he got gas, Greg Chambers and Larry Rosensteil joined riding skills from Oak Park, Ray and Lenore Rankin traveled the patch from Elburn, and a friend from Oregon, former Treasurer of Ogle Co, came to pass the bread. Again, food was great and thanks to Ken Jacobsen for reommending Grubsteakers.
Joke of the DAy:::: Tom Carlsen asked Larry R to evaluate his rear tire - does it have 2000 miles for a trip to CO?????? Well, Tom forgot that Larry R is a Dan Trampel and travel on CORDS and may check the air in his tire monthly - if he thinks about it or someone calls his attention to the tire. Thank goodness we had other expert sources to advise Tom.
Larry R continued to Madison, WI and the rest of us peeled on home. Ingrid and I traveled toward Oregon, took German Chruch Road (curvey)past the nuclear plant to Byron and then proceeded down Rte 2 to Dixon and I88 for home. 264 miles on a geourgous day!!!! Make the good times Roll!!!!
