For anyone interested in using one of the days between the MOA and RA National Rallies for a heep of fun, may I suggest a day of whitewater rafting on the New River in Central West Virginia? Summersville, WV is located about halfway between Johnson City, TN and Canaan Valley, WV. It is 3 1/2 hours (225 miles) NE of Johnson City and 2 1/2 hours (150 miles) south of Canaan Valley, WV. We could pick either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of that week between the rallies to do this. They allow camping at their site the night prior to and day of the rafting and it includes a good breakfast and BBQ dinner all for $40. What I suggest for a group adventure like this is the all day Lower New trip. It is $95. Here is the description: 1-day Lower New
Known as "The Gorge", this has been our most popular New River trip for over 30 years! From crashing waves to calm pools, this trip provides the perfect blend of exhilaration and relaxation as you navigate through Class III - V rapids. You'll experience amazing canyon scenery, choose to plunge from Jump Rock, and capture glimpses of historic mining towns long abandoned before floating beneath the famous New River Gorge Bridge.(Note-This bridge is the longest single span bridge in the Western Hemisphere)
Here is the link to the company I used last year and they were great. This will give you more details.

Based upon the level of interest, we would go out as a team in one or multiple boats. It is always a lot more fun when you are with a group you know. Please call me directly if you have any interest or any questions about this. I will start building a list and try to get a concensus on dates. I'm not an experienced rafter. Last June was my first time, but it was so much fun, I'm anxious to do it again. It was the best $135 I spent on my 6 week trip last year.
My number is
630-235-9898. Don't be hesitant at all if this perks your interest. I plan to do it myself, even if no one else expresses interest. I plan to leave for the rally shortly after the 4th of July and not return until mid-August, but I will be available via cell phone throughout that time. Hope I hear from some of you.
