I'm a big fan of the club's Hot Dog Rides. It's a terrific idea that's been expertly crafted and superbly delivered over the years!

I was wondering of all of the places that we've been to over the years what are your personal favorites?

My current top three hot dog eateries are:

1 - Gene and Jude's in River Grove - my gold standard for hot dogs and fries. In my mind there is no better combination of vienna dogs with just the right crunch factor, perfectly steamed buns, handcut freshly made fries, tremendous value and old school atmosphere!

2 - Slott's Hots in Libertyville - don't think we've visited this fine establishment yet, but . . . it's where I go when I'm teaching at my Vernon Hills training facility and anytime I'm driving down Milwaukee Rd. Full service menu, restrooms and seating area inside and outside. Excellent food at a fair price. The dogs are good, but the beef and sausage sandwiches are awesome and topped with the best grilled sweet peppers I've ever tasted. Motorcycle friendly.

3 - Delicious Red's in Lake Zurich. New this fall - it occupies the old Main Dog and the insurance company that used to be next store. Good news is the menu is modeled after Gene and Jude's - dogs, hand cut seasoned fries, tamales and soft drinks. They differ from the original in that they do have seating and bathrooms. Better news it is a motorcycle themed dog stand, although the owners need to be schooled on what a proper motorcycle is.

I'm looking forward to others comments. Mine are biased towards what I grew up with and were I currently live and work.

1)Johnnies Wee-Nee Wagon: 159th & Crawford Ave. Markham 708-333-8584 N41 36.100 W87 43.001

2)Spuntinos Hot Dog Factory: 516 W. Higgins, Park Ridge 847-696-0282 N41 59.134 W87 49.833

3)Scoobies Red Hots: North Ave & Prince Crossing Rd, West Chicago 630-213-4848 N41 54.680 W88 10.929

4)Scoobies Red Hots: North Ave & Prince Crossing Rd, West Chicago 630-213-4848 N41 54.680 W88 10.929

4)Cs Pizza: 1201 Cermak Rd, Broadview 708-345-3500

5)Super Dawg: 6363 N. Milwaukee Ave. Chicago 773-763-0660 N41 59.789 W87 47.219

In that order due to my experiences with the people of the Hot Dog eateries and their willingness to accommodate such a large crowd with no advance notice.

As I will not eat a Hot Dog, no matter who prepares it, the food is not part of my judging criteria.

These are two places I have been going to for lunch since working in Lake Bluff:

1) Scooters. Located on hwy 176 (Rockland Road) just east of Waukegan Road. Vienna hotdogs that are very good, but my favorite is the gyros which is excellent. Has restroom and parking lot large enough for our group. I'm not sure how late they stay open on monday nights, but I can ask next time I'm there. Even Mikey likes this place.

2) Lukes. Located on Waukegan Road a couple blocks north of hwy 176, east side of street. New management is trying hard to please customers and it shows. Food includes teriyaki chicken on pita, Vienna hotdogs, gyros, pasta, and an outstanding steak sandwich. Also has parking enough for us and restrooms. Open to 8pm. I can't vouch for other Lukes locations, I only know this one is very good.

I have had hotdogs (and other stuff) at both these places and the food IS my primary judging criteria. How can one evaluate a restaurant without eating there? Reminds me of the guys who trash-talk Harleys without riding one. Well, I have ridden Harleys and I can tell you... never mind. I'm getting off subject here.

John,

I've eaten at Scooters over the years and agree that it would make a great stop on the 2010 Dog sked.

When I taught high school math, I was a union rep for a few years. Our meetings were just down the street. I used to work late at the school and then stop at Scooters for dinner before heading to the meeting. It made the long day a bit more bearable. Whenever I'm in the area, I like to stop in and grab a dog.

2010 Hot Dog Schedule is Hot off the Press! 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 2
Check our calendar on the forum, the entire schedule for 2010 has been posted. A number of new Hot Dog Digs are listed. And the NEW Wheeling Superdawg is on it. It opened 2 weeks ago and has a steady stream of customers already.
There are two "to be announced" Hot Dog nights this year. So, if you have a place you'd like to recommend, please let us know.
Remember, we need a big parking lot (flat enough, too), good hot dogs and they need to be OPEN on a Monday.
Less than a month till the fun begins.
