How to replace a lost and ONLY key 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Hope someone can help...I just bought a 1999 BMW R1100RT and the only key got lost by the transporter on drop off and it's parked down at my relatives in Indianapolis,In. where I was picking it up this 4th of July weekend and riding back home to Chicago.

What do I do? Can I order a key cut from the BMW dealer with a vin? Order a blank and see if a locksmith could tumble and cut off the one bag with a same lock that was unattached? I don't have fob #'s (could be in the manuals locked in the city bags though) and thought about picking the lock to at least get it home.

The last thing would be to drill out the lock but I might have a minor heart attack from the grief...

Who can I call? What can I do!

New to this group and as a BMW motorcycle owner so thank you in advance to any and all that can help.

Pete,

I have a riding buddy who is also a top notch locksmith. Give Karl a call, 847-875-7000. I'm sure he can provide an excellent solution to your problem.

I'll also send him a message asking about the problem. Good luck with a frustrating situation. Larry

Hi Pete. I think you might be able to get a key from a dealer with a VIN AND PROOF of ownership of the bike. BMW keys are cut on steel blanks, not brass, so not every key maker will be able to make a proper duplicate.

Another (expensive) solution would be to purchase a new ignition lock with key and get it installed (special tools required, I think). There's still a dealer in Indy, isn't there?

[Can you get the transporter to pay for all this?]

Good luck, and hope to meet you soon. (General meeting is tonight...)

Thanks Larry and Tim!

The dealer I bought it from hasn't sent me the title yet from Arkansas so I'm going to Chicago BMW with my ID and buyer's order to get it ordered from Germany...They only will do it in person, which I understand.

Called the two BMW dealer's in Missouri where it was serviced to make sure the lock wasn't changed over the years, hopefully.

So long story short, I ordered a wayfer lock pick and european car locksmith kit and going down to Indy this weekend and giving it a try.

Look forward to meeting all with the club soon.

Best,

Pete
