Cindy and I recently traveled west for a two and a half week vacation. Most of our time was spent in South Dakota ,Wyoming and Colorado though we passed through parts of other states including Montana, Utah and New Mexico.

Ordinarily we avoid Interstate highways but even they were surprisingly interesting in Colorado and Wyoming where they thread their way through the mountains.

Have you ever started a trip in one direction and then, even before stopping for breakfast, find yourself headed in another?

It happened to me in 2006, before I was 40 miles from home on my way to the BMW Riders Association (the RA) rally in Boise, Idaho. 

I have a goal of riding the same motorcycle, my 1985 K100RT that I’ve had since 1991, in all the lower 48 states, and at that time I still needed eight states: Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Texas and New Mexico out west plus Maine and Rhode Island back east.

I figured on picking off Washington, Oregon, Utah and Idaho while doing the rally in Idaho.

My wife Meg and I took a quick (Friday through Sunday) trip up to Door County in early September and camped at Peninsula State Park.
It was our first motorcycle camping adventure and I would defi­nitely declare it a success—great weather, fun riding and no bike or camping-related disasters.
